Welcome

Buddha’s Birthday Education Project is a website celebrating the birth of the Buddha. This web site is a focal point for organising events celebrating the Birth of the Buddha, promoting education and understanding of Buddhism. It describes research into the spread of Buddhism from India to China and historic celebrations of the Buddha’s birthday, and displays images of artwork created for those events by project volunteers.

VISION
We envision making available to scholars, students, Buddhists, and the public a set of reliable resources on the Buddha’s birth accounts, significant Buddha’s birthday celebrations in history, and innovative Vesak festivals in contemporary contexts.

These resources may be used in schools to help students better understand Vesak or contribute towards further research in Buddha’s birthday.
MISSION
The mission of the Buddha’s Birthday Education Project is twofold:

(1) to leverage on the most popular Buddhist festival in order to educate interested parties in the conditions leading to its success worldwide;and

(2) to allow for assimilation into local cultures in the here and now. This project delivers to the public information about the Buddha’s Birthday festival and its historical roots through volunteers who immerse themselves into creative pursuits to make history relevant to today’s cultures.
GOALS
(1) To deliver new research related to the Buddha’s birthday and its celebration around the world by highlighting the confluence of cultures through issues related to the globalisation and localisation of Buddhism.

(2) To produce an annual event using quality portable and reusable materials so as to complement local festivals and rituals.

(3) To produce and update the website and other media so that relevant materials are made accessible.
